OHSU and OSU researchers collaborate to design a new drug delivery system that shows promise in treating a rare, aggressive form of cancer affecting pregnant women and new mothers; Maureen Baldwin, M.D., says: “Because choriocarcinoma occurs in people who were recently pregnant, they often have young families, so we need to make getting diagnosis and treatment easier and faster for them.”

OHSU expands its remote addiction training service for health care workers and law enforcement to better deal with the state's addiction crisis; Dan Hoover, M.D., says: “Seeing so much more interest was huge for us. We’re increasing what we’re doing in response to the increasing need for substance use treatment.”

OHSU and research collaborators receive $4 million from the U.S. Department of Defense to look into the underlying factors contributing to the increased risk of Parkinson’s disease in people who experience sleep disturbances and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Cristiane Miranda França, D.D.S, Ph.D., comments on a research team at Tufts University School of Dentistry who grew a mixture of pig and human tooth cells in pieces of pig teeth to create bioengineered structures that resemble real human teeth: “[Yelick] applied basic science to develop a tooth. And it’s amazing."

OPB’s “Think Out Loud” interviews Steve Stadum about rejoining OHSU as interim president, and the opportunities and challenges the university faces: “I’m so proud to be back and I’m so proud of the institution. Everything it does every day is so great for Oregonians and so important. I think the biggest change since I left is [that] it’s continued to grow a lot and OHSU has become even more, I think, important to Oregonians, particularly rural and underserved patients. There’s more need now, I think. In coming out of the pandemic, I’ve certainly noticed there has been pent-up need for patient care, [a] pent-up demand and frankly more complex cases.”

Dr. Esther Choo, professor of Emergency Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University, was on the review panel for one of the cancelled sessions. Choo’s session last Thursday was set to review projects addressing the opioid crisis. She told the Capital Chronicle the cancellations were unprecedented in her career. “I have never seen it stop for any amount of time,” said Choo. “I haven’t yet encountered a researcher who remembers study sections and reviews being paused.”

The National Cancer Institute awarded OHSU $1.4 million in funding to develop a new training program to give M.D. and Ph.D. postdoctoral fellows hands-on experience with the process of developing novel therapeutics for patients with cancer. Shivaani Kummar, M.D., says, “We are committed to developing new treatments for cancer, and that commitment involves training the next generation of oncology physicians and researchers.”
